Ok … Fortune… And I’m probably showing my age - would they* get the reference?

*They, of course are the Digital Generation. Nadira Hira, the author of this Fortune cover story, calls them Generation Y, defined as those born between 1977 and 1995. She focuses more on the social and family environment in which this generation grew up (as opposed to my focus on the technological environment) in order to illuminate some of their behavioral and cultural traits. But the conclusions are similar - this generation will have a profound and transformational impact on the economy - both in the workplace and as consumers.

“This is the most high-maintenance workforce in the history of the world,” says Bruce Tulgan, the founder of leading generational-research firm RainmakerThinking. “The good news is they’re also going to be the most high-performing workforce in the history of the world. They walk in with more information in their heads, more information at their fingertips - and, sure, they have high expectations, but they have the highest expectations first and foremost for themselves.”

Anyhow, if you are over 40 and responsible for managing a team or recruiting young people, you probably should read this article (and perhaps also my thoughts on the subject and those of JP and Dave Morin.)
